ASGDC > About ASGDC

Introduction:

The Alaska State Geo-spatial Data Clearinghouse (ASGDC) provides an electronic pathway for the public to access a wide variety of information in the form of maps, images and descriptions about Alaska geo-spatial data. This site is developed as a "node" on the growing framework of public sites across the nation which together constitute the electronic back-bone of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

The Department of Natural Resources is the host agency for this site. It is open to all state and local agencies as a low-cost means for improving public access to geo-spatial data and maps. The ASGDC combines the documentation for GIS data from participating state and local government agencies and is organized by theme.

How to Add Metadata or a URL:

If you would like to add a website link to this site, you may do so here.

If you would like to browse available datasets, you may do so here.

If you would like to add a completed metadata record, please contact the ASGDC Administrator.

If you are starting new and would like to complete a metadata record, following is a guideline:

  1. Select a metadata tool.

There are number of metadata tools available for you to use on your own PC or workstation. What computer environment you have and what you want to document will determine the best software application to use. Review these sites to assess which will work best for you:

  2. Check for FGDC Compliance.

When you are done with your metadata, your metadata record needs to pass the "mp" test. This test ensures you have completed the information needed for the clearinghouses to index your information.

  3. Add to a clearinghouse node.

When you have completed your metadata and it passes the "mp" test, then you can add your metadata record to any of the clearinghouse nodes.

For state and local government, contact the ASGDC Administrator.
For Municipality of Anchorage, contact the System Administrator.
For Federal or non-profit organizations, contact the AGDC administrator
